Site overview

This beautiful rural property is nestled into the foothills of Mt Samaria and surrounded by the Samaria state forest and consists of over 100 acres of farming land. The property has some existing structures, built for the working farm, which includes a windmill and shearing shed.

Project Overview

This unique project brief was to convert an existing shearing shed, built close to 100 years ago, into a beautiful part time home/farm stay accommodation. This project was quite organic and forever evolving from initial design, through to completion. Nick Dunn (Big Mountain Homes) was the builder and took our initial design and brought it too life with beautiful detail and a unique craftsmanship, rarely found today.

A key element to this brief was to convert the building into a comfortable home while maintaining inspiration and form from the original shearing shed structure. The final build must blend in with the natural landscape as seamless as any shearing shed or sheep yard would.

Original galvanised iron and hardwood flooring were reused as both internal and external cladding with the original flooring being replaced with an insulated burnished concrete slab. Other features within the home include hardwood sliding barn doors, handmade from original structural timbers, galvanised iron lined ceiling with exposed natural log rafters and beams, beautifully hand-crafted light fittings & door furniture and a stonework fireplace. All the materials found within the original structure are featured somewhere throughout the finished home.

“THE WHOLE PROCESS WAS SMOOTH FROM START TO FINSIH COMPLETING AHEAD OF TIME - I WOULD 100% RECOMMEND MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO BUILD WITH TAYLOR DESIGN GROUP.”
